The Facts About Upright vs. Top-Loading Washing Machines

Is it time to buy a new washing machine? Most of us are used to the traditional top loading washing machine, and if you’re like me – you’ll need an incentive to make a change to an upright washer. Well, let’s look at the facts.

The typical top-loader has a vertically oriented tub with an agitator in the middle that forces water through clothing in a churning motion. The cycles are agitate, drain, refill, agitate again, drain, rinse and spin. The front-loading or upright machine does the same, but has a few significant advantages over the top-loader. It has the best energy ratings; a better spin cycle which leaves less water in the clothing; saves space; is gentler on clothes; and has more cycles and convenience features.

The traditional top-loader is easier to load and less expensive to buy. High efficiency washers in top-loading or front-loading upright versions, are more expensive, and are more energy and water conservative than traditional models.
